Coastal Oregon and Crater Lake National Park

Arch Rock, Oregon
The Oregon coast is so picturesque that we kept stopping along Rte. 101 to take pictures and explore the beaches. We spent a few days meandering along until we got to Coos Bay and had a weather window to visit Crater Lake inland.

Crater Lake is the caldera that was created when Mt. Mazama collapsed over 7,000 years ago following a huge eruption. This picturesque lake is fed purely by snowmelt and rainfall- and does it snow here. The lake is located about 100 miles from the Oregon coast and receives storms regularly. The lake is obscured by clouds 50% of the time in the winter, but we were fortunate to visit on the perfect day!!

The Crater Lake National Park has received over 51 ft of snow so far this year!!! The snowbanks were well over 20 ft high now. All of the buildings have snow tunnel entrances since the doors are buried under layers of snow!

BIG snow banks!!

Crater lake in all of it's beauty!!

Close up of Wizard Island.

This is the Crater Lake Visitor Center- can you find it??

The sign is an understatement.

  2. Greetings! I'm making a short video for the non-profit Fund for People in Parks (www.peopleinparks.org) and we're looking for images of families in front of different national park entrance signs. Can we possibly use your photo of your kids in front of that snowy Crater Lake sign? Thanks! Steve
