We arrived at the Fort Davis State Park to campsite #6. Unbeknownst to us at the time, it was the same campsite that Richard and his family had spent the night at on their cross country journey in 1976!!! We had a great meal at the Indian Lodge at the park. It's a lovely spot built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the early 1930's.
The next day we enjoyed a great visit to Fort Davis which is now a National Historic Site. The fort established in 1854 was mainly devoted to protecting settlers, the mail coaches from both Indian and Mexican raids. The site has been beautifully restored and we learned about early cavalry life in the post Civil War era. We also learned about the "Buffalo Soldiers" the nick name for the first two all -black regiments that were housed there to protect the settlers during the 1800's.
