Guadalupe Mountains National Park, March 2

The Guadalupe Mountains are the remains of an ancient marine fossil reef. It was once on the edge of a tropical ocean that once covered Texas and New Mexico- hard to believe considering the arid climate today! El Capitan is at the head of the mountain range and stood as a landmark for early travelers along the trek West. Guadalupe Peak is the highest in Texas with an elevation of 8749 feet.

We had a great stop at the visitor center and museum. The kids continued their Jr. Ranger programs and earned their badges. We took a short hike to the old Butterfield Stage Coach stop. This was the first mail delivery service from St. Louis to San Francisco in the 1880's.

The current local inhabitants.

Remains of the Butterfield coach stop where drivers would rest and get six fresh horses or mules to continue the journey on to San Francisco.

The view along the Devil's Hall trail.
Rock formations in the canyon looked man-made.

After lunch we took the Devil's Hall Canyon 5.5 mi. round trip hike into the park. Our campsite at the park that night was in the picturesque.

Dinner out!
