Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, New Mexico

The Gila Cliff Dwellings were amazing structures built by the Mogollon people in the 1200's. The structures are hidden in a valley, remnants of an ancient volcanic cone. These native people typically built on the plain in sunken huts. The circumstances during the era point to extended drought and warfare between neighboring tribes. Anthropologists surmise that the Mogollon took to the Gila Cliffs for defense. A small group of 50 individuals built these exquisite dwellings and only lived there approximately 25 years or so.

The land at the head of the Gila River was the birthplace of Geronimo.

We were allowed to tour through the inside of the dwellings.
Climbing in and out like the natives.

Crossing the Continental Divide!!!
