Remember the Alamo!! February 21-22

The Alamo wall monument!
Stephen F. Austin State Park, February 20

We made it across Louisiana into Texas to the park, just west of Houston. We enjoyed camping along the Brazos River. We biked and ran along their extensive trail system. The quiet was a welcome change after the noise of the city RV park in New Orleans. Weather here has been so dry- they haven't had rain since September!

San Antonio, TX. February 21-22

We made a visit to the Alamo museum and enjoyed learning more about the historic battle of the Texans and Santa Anna. Their amazing courage to withstand a siege lasting 13 days! The soldiers of the Texans were outnumbered thirty to one!!

One of our favorite frontier heroes has always been David Crockett from watching the old movie starring Fess Parker( I think they still have it at the NH Library if you have VHS). We learned that the movie was accurate in that Crockett had been defending, and lost his life at the Alamo.

The saying goes that if you stand in front of the Alamo and say "Ya'll" one hundred times- you become a Texan. We walked down from the Alamo and meandered along the San Antonio River Walk and a river boat ride in this historic city.

The best part of the stop in San Antonia was a chance to meet another family traveling around the country like us! They are from Switzerland and have two daughters. The kids got along famously, and although the girls speak French, the children seemed to have no trouble communicating. They had a great afternoon and evening playing together. We parents also swapped travel stories and adventures.

Famous frontiersman David Crockett.
