Rockhound State Park, NM/ Roper State Park, AZ

The Rockhound State Park is the treasure hunter's dream come true. The hills are rich with jasper, agate, geodes,  and perilite all for the taking. Each visitor is allowed to take up to 15 lbs. per person!!! We hunted and had some moderate success. While visiting with the ranger he told us about the rock hunter who had found the largest geode in the park the day before. He had dug out a geode that was well over 15 lbs and now on display at the visitor center.

We found both pink and red jasper!
We met up with this expert and found we were rather ill equipped without gloves, pick ax, rock hammer etc. but he educated us with tips for rock hunting and we had some great fun. Thank heavens we didn't max out our weight limit- it would have been terrible for gas mileage.

We crossed over to Arizona and headed up to Roper State Park. It was a lovely setting on the side of a lake, boasting of a hot spring in the campground. We enjoyed running and hiking around the lake, the quail that abounded, and of course the hot spring!

Hot springs at 6am wasn't actually so hot!
